The Criteria
I started with a basic fantasy format. 1QB, 2RB, 2WR, 1TE, 1FLEX, 1K, 1DEF, and 6 bench players. The scoring is standard NFL fantasy scoring (no ppr and 4 pts for passing TD). The defense was decided by taking the stats from the 10 greatest defenses of all-time and calculating their fantasy points per game using standard defensive scoring. I opened up the list to the history of the NFL and not just modern era. The last piece of criteria was the player had to play in at least 75% of their teams games during that particular season.
The Team
The team is obviously stacked top to bottom with no big surprises to me except one. I did not realize how dominant Elroy “Crazy Legs” Hirsch’s 1951 season was; 1,495 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns….in a 12 game season. There are 5 MVP seasons: Rodgers in ’11, Manning in ’13, Faulk in ’00, Tomlinson in ’06, and Brown in ’58. The team could skip the bye week for the Kicker and still go undefeated, but if we were to go to the waiver wire, Akers would be replaced by 2003 Rams Kicker Jeff Wilkins (10.73). Simpson and Brown would handle the bye weeks for the RBs and Flex. Neither Hirsch nor Rice had bye weeks, but Moss would have to fill in for Hirsch at the end of the season, as he only played in 12 games. Graham would have to be just an injury hold for Gronk, as they share a week 7 bye. That means we would need to go to the waiver wire and pick up ’61 Mike Ditka (12.69), whose 61 yards and 1 TD in his week 7 match-up with the Baltimore Colts would provide plenty of support.
This team would average a staggering 192.97 points per game. To put that in to perspective, the optimal roster from last year (2016) put together an average of 139.30 points per game, under standard scoring.
